I have to say I'm intrigued by this idea that the insane are detained indefinitely but the merely criminal can be punished only so much (unless they remain a danger to society). Really seems to be the logical way to go. Our legal system creates a really perverse situation, where sane, criminal people pretend to be insane to get off for crimes, and then because they are actually sane are eventually released from institutions because they can stop "acting" insane later on.
