How a 10-year-old gets charged as an adult.

The ABA Journal has an article about a shocking crime: a 10-year-old boy in Northeastern Pennsylvania has been charged with beating a 90-year-old woman to death.

You can't quit, you're fired.

Although I am still feeling pretty unsettled about the shooting in Newtown Connecticut on Friday, I assume that our Reader(s)™ want a diversion from the bad news.  Perhaps something from the judges do the darndest things file.

People with nothing better to do.

A couple weeks ago we posted on the punishment Penn State received from the NCAA.  This was punishment that Penn State agreed to.  Nevertheless, ESPN reports that former Penn State football players are appealing the punishment.  The letter from the player's lawyers notifying the NCAA of the appeal is here.

Was Penn State punished enough?

Other than this, we have not blogged about the Penn State/Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal.  If one is inclined to believe the Freeh Report--and I think everyone other than perhaps Jerry Sandusky and Joe Paterno's family believes the Freeh Report--then it is clear that since 1998 Penn State officials knew that Jerry Sandusky was acting inappropriately with children.  Penn State's response to that knowledge was to engage in actions that seemed to designed to cover up Sandusky's behavior rather than report it to the authorities. 

Sometimes the first thought is not the best thought.

If you ever find yourself accused of hitting, choking, and trying to gouge out the eyes of the child of your former law firm partner, you may wish to reconsider some of the decisions that got you to that point.  This is especially true when the best the lawyer defending you in the matter can say is that the encounter was a "huge misunderstanding." 

You know, because trying to gouge out a person's eyes is susceptible to more than one meaning.
