Birthers have been around longer than we think.
In March, I pointed out that a lot of what we call politics is really a non-cartoon example of Mad Magazine's "Spy vs. Spy." As I noted then, this is not an original thought. However, Reuters has another example of this phenomenom. Democrats used to be birthers. Of course, they were not questioning whether President Obama is a natural born citizen. Instead they were questioning whether George Romney, Mitt Romney's father, was eligible to become president of the United States.

Wanda Brown is tired of being called a racist.
Ms. Brown, a Repblican member of the Missouri House of Representatives, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, that the legislation that the Missouri House passed last week does not "speak of racisim." Accordingly, Ms. Brown is, "tired of being called racist." What is the legislation you ask? A "birther bill" requiring presidential candidates to provide a birth certificate in order to be placed on the Missouri presidential ballot. The Post-Dispatch notes, that "If approved, Missouri could become the first state to require such documents. It would go into effect in time for the 2016 election." Given that the governor of Missouri is Jay Nixon, a Democrat, I am not sure what set of circumstances would allow the bill to become law.
As Groucho Marx might have said but did not, “I know Missouri is the Show-Me State, but this is ridiculous.”

Birtherism is still a thing.
Someone once said the only certain things in life are death and taxes. We should add birtherism to the list. According to the Los Angeles Times, Sherrif Joe Arpaio is says there is probable cause to believe that "fraud and forgery" occurred in connection with President Obama's birth certificate. Sherrif Arpaio would also like you to ignore the Justice Department report that accused him of bias towards Latinos.
On the other hand, perhaps even its most ardent believers will quit caring about birtherism in either November 2012 or November 2016 depending on election results.
